Tutorial part 1 by makangeni Tutorial part 1 by makangeni
The first part of my tutorial, I hope it will be useful :)

I use Open Canvas, but I think that this tutorial would work also using Photoshop.
If something is not clear, you can ask me here, I'll try to explain better the difficult parts (if there are).
Tell me also if there are grammatical errors, english is not my language.
If you want, you can link here the paintings you do using this tutorial.

Thanks for looking!

Thanks to :iconnautte: for the grammar corrections!

This is not tracing, nor photomanipulation.
I copied the photo reference, this is free hand digital art.

how to you make the lines for the fur kinda vary in thickness?
like the lines are skinny, then thicker, then skinnier...
idk how to do that...

I vary the pression of the pen on the tablet, if I press the line is thick if I don't it's thin. I think you can't do it because of the program you use... which one do you use?

oh yes, sorry, now I get it.
no tracing, just copying.

using references is something normal in realistic art, what's wrong with this tutorial? I used a stock photo and I credited the author.

I understand your argument, although to me it's like cheating, and it's not original art anymore :( I guess it bothers me to see a tutorial on absolute copy step by step.

I think it's not cheating if your goal is to reach realism, I think it's cheating if you trace but I've never traced.
moreover, this is a tutorial also directed to beginners, so if you want to help people learning how to draw reaistically it's inevitable to use photos.
In my real life I want to became a naturalist-artist (who realizes scientific illustrations for books, magazines and so on). Well, they copy from the real life and copying from photos is the first step. I don't think I'm doing something wrong :)
I think it's still art if you put something yours into it.
But this is my personal thinking, I understand that someone can have a different opinion.

This is very well done ^^ I know it will be a major help to many artists. The drawing itself is also looking amazing. There were a few grammar errors but your english is still very good, I wouldn't worry about it :D Great job !

ok, if you say that the errors I made are not very important, I trust you :) I was asking because I always try to be correct when I write and when I speak italian. but, after all, when you speak/write using a language that is not yours, the important thing is that what you want to say is clear

You're welcome ^^
I understood what you were talking about in the tutorial despite the errors. They were not that major. I hear English is one of the hardest languages to learn so its understandable (English is my first language)If you would like me to point out the errors so that you can fix them I would be more than happy to (:

You're welcome :D
1) "When you copy a photo look at it the more you can." "More" should be "most".
2) "Try to start from a "unusual" part" This is a very minor mistake but "a" should be "an".
3) "Add the more colors you can picking them from the photo, trying to put them in the right spaces." I would reword that as "Add as many colors as you can by picking them from the photo and putting them in the right places."
4) "Paint with a dark color the "lineart" on the same level of color." I'm not sure that this is an error but I think it would sound better as "Paint the lineart with a dark color on the same level of color."

Those are the only mistakes I have found ^^
